I cannot stop listening to February

This has nothing to do with the fact that it’s February. I couldn’t stop listening to them in January or December or November I either. I first heard them at Suzanne Fiol’s memorial, and I cannot wait to see them again. They’re brilliant. Wonderful to dance to. Cathartic. Loud. I’ll never forget arranging $600 worth of flowers for the memorial while listening to them sound check. So loud. A brilliant way to spend a Sunday morning, and probably a once-and-only. You can see them at ISSUE on February 27th and 28th for a live recording. Must-see.

Isn’t it sweet that he lit a candle for you, bathing his man cave in a warm glow and the smell of … wait, is that skunk? Pal, you are so not getting laid tonight. He’ll run that risk if he falls for Mandles. But it’s apparently not a joke to two entrepreneurs who are staking their latest business venture on the belief that manly men will buy candles with potent scents like Skunk, Rawhide, Swimsuit Model, Grass, Auto Shop and Campfire Smoke. Launched by a husband-and-wife team, Mandles Co. advertises its products as “candles on testosterone.”

On the horizon: Burnt Gunpowder, for that just-pulled-an-armed-robbery smell. Pipe dream: Wet Dog. What’s probably not in the cards for buyers of these $15 stinkpots is human contact with anyone but their drinking buddies.

This is a pretty awesome short of people dancing through the streets of the Lower East Side in what appears to be the early 80s. Note that Zeena Parkins, who plays harp in this video, has performed at ISSUE Project Room several times.

I love DJ Vadim, a Russian dj whose musical influences include some of my favorite hip hop and Jamaican artists, such as Lee Perry and Alton Ellis, as well as King Tubby. He posted this awesome Lee Perry song, which is new to me, on his blog. If I’d been familiar with Vadim when I still had a radio show I would’ve played him all the time.
